The Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) registered their first win of the IPL 2024 season with a convincing 21-run victory over the Punjab Kings (PBKS) at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow on March 30th.
LSG posts a competitive total
LSG, electing to bat first, put up a fighting total of 199/8 on the board. Deepak Hooda (42 off 28 balls) and Krunal Pandya (38* off 27 balls) provided a crucial middle-order impetus after a shaky start. Quick cameos from KL Rahul (30 off 21 balls) and Marcus Stoinis (28 off 19 balls) further propelled the LSG score. Arshdeep Singh (2-37) was the pick of the Punjab bowlers.
Mayank Yadav shines on debut as Punjab falters
Chasing a target of 200, PBKS got off to a promising start with a century opening stand between Shikhar Dhawan (72 off 48 balls) and Jonny Bairstow (42 off 25 balls). However, the introduction of debutant Mayank Yadav (3-27) turned the tide in LSG’s favor. Yadav rattled the Punjab batting order, dismissing Bairstow, Prabhsimran Singh, and Jitesh Sharma in quick succession.
LSG bowlers seal the win
Despite a late flourish from Nicholas Pooran (34 off 21 balls), PBKS could only manage 178/5 in their allotted 20 overs. Avesh Khan (1-29) and Ravi Bishnoi (1-25) provided crucial support to Yadav, ensuring LSG secured a vital victory.
