The Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium in Hyderabad witnessed history on March 27th as the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) and Mumbai Indians (MI) clash produced the highest-scoring T20 match ever.
Batting Records Tumble for SRH
SRH batted first and set a mammoth total of 277-3, the highest in IPL history. Openers Abhishek Sharma (63) and Travis Head (62) laid the foundation with blistering half-centuries. The showstopper was Heinrich Klaasen, who came in at number three and smashed an unbeaten 80 off just 34 balls, peppering the boundaries with sixes and fours.
Mumbai Fightback Falls Short
Chasing a record target, MI put up a valiant effort. Openers Ishan Kishan and Rohit Sharma provided a solid start, but wickets at regular intervals kept them in check. Hardik Pandya played a lone warrior knock, scoring a belligerent 78, but it wasn’t enough. MI finished with 246 all out, falling short by 31 runs.
A Night of Records
The match was a night of many records. The combined score of 523 runs surpassed the previous record for the highest total in a T20 match (517 runs between West Indies and South Africa in 2023). Klaasen’s knock was the fastest ever eighty in IPL history.
SRH Clinch First Win
The victory was a much-needed one for SRH, who registered their first points of the IPL 2024 season. Pat Cummins’ bowling attack, with Bhuvneshwar Kumar chipping in with two wickets, ensured Mumbai’s chase never quite took off.
